-The Race to the Moon: 1962-1972 (La course vers la lune :1962-1972)
In 1962 President John F. Kennedy gave his famous “We’re going to the moon” speech, and the race was on! The decade between 1962 and 1972 saw the birth of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo projects, culminating with the last manned moon landing in 1972. Any subject, United States or Soviet, that moved man along in the race to the moon would qualify for this theme award.
-1942: Guadalcanal
Seventy years ago, on August 7, 1942 the United States and other Allied forces landed on the islands of Guadalcanal. The objective was to cut off Japanese supply and communication routes, and to use the newly-built Japanese airfield (later christened Henderson Field) as a base to attack enemy installations on Rabaul. The battle was fiercly fought, with three large land battles, seven large naval battles, and continual, almost daily aerial battles. Ultimately, the Allies were successful in defeating the Japanese in December of 1942. This theme award will be for the best subject representing the Guadalcanal campaign.
-1942: Stalingrad
In August of 1942 Nazi Germany and it's Axis Allies began the largest engagement on the Eastern Front - the Battle of Stalingrad. It began with an intensive bombing campaign by the German Luftwaffe, followed by brutal and deadly house-to-house conflict within the destroyed city. This battle was a turning point in the war, because the Russians inflicted such crippling losses on the German Army that they never recovered and attained no further strategic victories in the east. There should be plenty of great models to compete for this theme award!
-A Cold War Heats Up: The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962:50th Anniversary)
(50e anniversaire dela crise des missiles de Cuba 1962)
In October of 1962 a United States Air Force U-2 spy plane confirmed the existence of secret bomber bases built on the Communist island of Cuba by the Soviet Union. These medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles had the ability to strike most of the continental United States. In response, the United States blockaded the island, and would not allow offensive weapons to be delivered; demands were also made that the Soviets dismantle and remove all completed weapons in Cuba. Fifty years later, the chess game played by John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev is viewed as one of the most critical confrontations of the Cold War, and the closest the US and Soviet Union came to a real nuclear conflict. This theme will cover subjects from that frightening period of world history.
-100 Years of Chevrolet: 1912-2012 (100 années de Chevrolet: 1912-2012)
Though the Chevrolet brand was founded in 1911, the first production Chevrolet rolled off the assembly line in April of 1912. Celebrate that 100th anniversary by picking an automotive subject from the last 100 years of the Chevy catalog. From the classic early V-8's to the fins of the fifties, the muscle cars of the 60's and the technology of tomorrow, there should be plenty of subjects to choose from to qualify for this theme award! Production cars, race cars, street rods, customs, and concepts have all carried the Bowtie emblem. Build what you think best represents the Chevrolet legacy.thèmes
